US Open : a brief introduction

The US open has roots way back to August in 1881 when it began as an entertainment event exclusively reserved to the upper class circles of the time.

The first men's single was held in Newport at the Casino, Rhode Island under the title of US National Singles Championship.

The first singles final was played between William E. Glyn and Richard D.Sears who won the tournament every year until 1887. The same year the first US Women’s National Singles Championship was held at
the Philadelphia Cricket Club

The final was won by Ellen Hansell which dominated the match defeating Laura Knight 6-1, 6-0. The tournament soon gained interest from many parts of the US, different venues where held around the country with five emerging as major annual events.

In 1968 all the separate competitions were merged together at the West Side Tennis Club in Forest Hills, Queens, New York to became what we today know as the US Open.
In 1978 the Championship moved to Flushing Meadows to its current loacation, tennis was to be enjoyed by everyone, the aristocratic legacy label did not survive at the USTA National Tennis Center. The main court is located at the 23,000-seat Arthur Ashe Stadium Arthur. Mr Ash was a the first black man to win at the U.S. Open (1968) and Wimbledon (1975).

The surfaces of all the courts are hard with fast bouncing balls resulting in high speed tennis.
As a note of interest, hardcourts are made of asphalt or concrete and are finished with latex paint mixed with sand or other hard particles to give them the gritty feel.

The tournament is held over two weeks late August early September, admission is free to the Qualifying Tournament held on field courts at the USTA National Tennis Center, top players are seeded and wont be taking part in the qualifications matches, you can see them on Practice Day before the main US Open begins. The Us Open has two daily sessions, the evening session is cheaper, tickets prices varies depending on the day, the session, am or pm and the seating level.
